Learn how to make beautiful jewellery from silver clay.

Learn how to make beautiful jewellery from silver clay.

I have been teaching a one day beginner's guide to silver clay for many years now. I currently hold the course once a month at the Blue Moon Gallery in Heswall on the Wirral, North West England. This upstairs room is quiet and tucked away and surrounded by beautiful art on the walls, it is the perfect environment to teach small groups the art of silver clay.

I only take four students at a maximum as this allows me to give everyone the time they deserve to make some really beautiful unique pendants for necklaces, charms for bracelets, earrings or brooches.

I love to see my course attendees imaginations in action and see how they choose to use the clay. I love using inspiration from nature and so will always bring with me a selection of freshly harvested sprigs and leaves from my garden which can be used to press into the clay and make some beautiful unique charms and pendants.

I have a collection of seashells and cuttlefish and encourage the attendees to bring their own treasures too. Many people have brought buttons from loved ones and old pieces of their own or their family jewellery. Using special modelling clay we can make moulds of these little items and the press the silver clay in to make replica models in beautiful silver. which they have reinvented and modernised in the silver charms and pendants.

A popular use of silver clay is to use it to make fingerprint, footprint or handprint jewellery. Attendees who want to do this are sent the relevant kits in advance of the course date and then they are able to make this most precious jewellery themselves using their own children and families prints.

Course attendees are given 20g of silver. This can be all in the clay form or 10g can be provided as silver paste. The silver paste can be used to paint the back of leaves and this results in beautiful silver replica leaves. The level of details seen in these leaves which can be made into earrings, brooches or necklace pendants is truly stunning.

I’ve just returned from a silver clay taster workshop with a pair of earrings and matching pendant that I’m over the moon with. Georgina gave very clear instructions and was more than happy to share hints and tips too. I can’t wait to go back in the full day workshop
